America is strange land for many, but from the very first moments on American soil, the units of measurement are something that is exceptionally surprising! Feet, inch, miles, pounds, Fahrenheit degrees . Nothing stands together here. It does not make any sense to a person, who is used to using centimeters, meters, kilograms, or Celsius degrees, on daily basis.. what do you mean there is no metric system here..?
In Europe, everything is logical, we have millimeters, 10mm is 1cm, 100cm is 1m and so on. Here, the smallest measure of length is an inch. If we need to enter a size smaller than an inch, e.g., a few mm, we will have to divide an inch into: 1/16, 1/8/ ¼ and so on…. Plain madness!. Logically , you would think that is at least 10 inches is a foot. Well, gotcha again! A foot is actually 12 inches!! So, there is only one question that is comes to everybody’s mind… what the hell is this??
How come America has this strange system??
Here in USA , since it was formalized in 1832, United States customary units (U.S. customary units) are a system of measurements commonly used all over the country.
The United States customary system (USCS or USC) was originally developed from English units which were in use in the British Empire, long before before the U.S. became a fully independent country. The United Kingdom’s system of measures itself was updated in 1824 to create the imperial system, which was officially adopted in 1826. He change was needed to keep up with the industrial revolution, and quickly growing trade with the rest of Europe, that was using the Metric system. So, for the United Kingdom, it was more of a business decision.
Well, here in America the system did not changed. The Americans kept their measurements separate , from the rest of the Old world. Industrial revolution here, and the economic growth were measured in miles, pounds, and Fahrenheit’s.
While we find the measurement system familiar in almost every place of the world. The interesting fact is, that is only three countries continue to use, this old English system of measurement: The United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. So, what is the rest of the world using?
The END of the metric system dream!
- Over the years , lots of voices has been raised to bring the metric system to America and convert all thee units.
- In 1916 the Metric Association, formed a Non-Profit organization, advocating publicly the change of the measurement system.
- In 1968 a 3-year study was founded by the government, to determine the impact of the measurements change, and metric use on the US territory. After it was finish, and the results published, it was announced that is it will take about 10 years, for the full conversion.
- In 1975 the US Congress passed the Metric Conversion Act of 1975! The US Metric board was created to supervised and coordinate the plan of increasing usage of metric system.
- The Metric Board was abolished in 1982 by President Ronald Reagan. He cut the funding to the program, and by this it kill completely the plan of changing the measurement system in the US.
The Metric System
In opposition to America, the rest of the world uses what is known as the metric system, which is a decimal-based system that uses units that are related by factors of ten. While many Americans are unfamiliar with the metric system, it is a much simpler system to use in terms of the math required for basic calculations and it avoids unnecessary units for volume.

US Customary Units
And now the elephant in the room. I live here for quite some time, but still, till this day, there are measurements, especially when I am cooking, that is makes me stop and think how much exactly that is.
MASS & WEIGHT:
There have historically been five different English systems of mass: tower, apothecaries’, troy, avoirdupois, and metric. Of these, the avoirdupois weight is the most common system used in the U.S., although Troy weight is still used to weigh precious metals. Apothecaries weight—once used by pharmacies—has been largely replaced by metric measurements.
